BLUES FOR MR. CHARLIE
Written by James Baldwin, Blues for Mr. Charlie is a story of race and oppression. Although set in a symbolically named southern town, Baldwin original play derived much its substance from the 1955 murder of Emmett Till. Blues for Mr. Charlie made its Broadway debut at the ANTA Playhouse in April of 1964 and closed on its 148th Broadway performance in August of 1964. Shortly thereafter, Blues made its London debut at the Aldwych Theatre. Blues' road tour was part of England's World Theatre Season and marked the first time that an American theatrical group had been invited to participate in the annual festival which was presented jointly by Peter Daubeny, artistic Director of England's World Theatre Season and the Governors of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Diana Sands was nominated for the 1964 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in Play for her role as Juanita.
