Library for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped

CLASS ~ Columbus Library for Accessible Services
“A Library at Your Door”

If you are a child or adult who can’t read materials printed by conventional methods, you may qualify for a free public library service. Through the Georgia Library for Accessible Services and cooperating local libraries, Georgians have access to a national library program which offers braille and recorded materials.

CLASS serves as one of the 13 subregional distribution centers for the blind and physically handicapped located throughout Georgia, commonly referred to as "talking book libraries." Books and magazines on audiocassettes are provided by the Library of Congress, National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS).

CLASS has a collection of more than 20,000 items and receives 200 new items each month. Included are best sellers by such popular authors as Danielle Steele and Stephen King, as well as a large number of romance, mystery, western, science fiction and biography books. New users can search the online catalog for Braille, recorded books and descriptive videos, place requests and more!
CLASS will start receiving new digital players for distribution to our customers in August, with Veterans having priority. The digital players are more compact and much simpler to use than previous models. We already have a waiting list of applicants who want to “move into the digital age.” Another advantage of the new system is the capability of users to download books directly from the NLS catalog to flash drives from their home computers.

If you qualify for the service, you can select and receive your material through the mail, or, if you prefer, you can visit CLASS at the Columbus Public Library to choose your tapes. All materials may be returned through the mail, free of charge, or at the library.

We also maintain catalogs that specialize in providing devices to assist people with disabilities to read or perform daily tasks, and our staff is available to answer your questions or assist as needed.
